Welcome!
If you're my reader - that is, a reader of anything I've written - thank you.
So far, I've written three novels and one Young Readers adaptation of an (extraordinary) non-fiction book. The first two novels are for adults under my maiden name, Kathleen DeMarco: Cranberry Queen and The Difference Between You and Me. The third novel is a "middle grade" book for children, meaning it's ostensibly for children ages eight through thirteen, although I've been told by readers who are eighty-one that they like it, so perhaps "middle grade" should be "any grade." It is called Drizzle and if you like books about magical farms where it rains every Monday at one o'clock (and where the rhubarb tastes like chocolate), well, you've found your book.
My most recent book - NEVER CAUGHT, the Story of Ona Judge: George and Martha Washington's Courageous Slave Who Dared To Run Away - came out in January 2019. It's received starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly and The Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books and in May of 2020, won the 7th Annual Children's History Book Prize. (Pause for exclamation: HURRAY! #TeamOna)
I was lucky enough to co-author this with the brilliant writer/historian, Erica Armstrong Dunbar (www.ericaarmstrongdunbar.com), whose original book, also called Never Caught, won a zillion awards and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Ona's story is brave, harrowing and most important of all, true. I share the hope of many people when I say that I look forward to the day that the name of Ona Judge becomes as well known as George Washington's.
I'm writing a new "middle grade/any grade" series about pizza, the Jersey Shore (the real one, not the one people use as a joke), and climate change. The main character's name is Ike. I'm also writing a new adult novel... which has been pretty fun. Of late, I'm also in the process of finishing a screenplay that I'm very, very excited about... but that's all I'm going to say about that!
In the past, I've worked as a film producer, screenwriter and development executive. Some of the movies I worked on appear below.
I now teach at the University of Pennsylvania, my alma mater. I'm married and have two sons, One of them has read Drizzle and Never Caught. The other is not my favorite.
If you'd like to contact me, please email at [email protected]. It's become a great joy to go to schools and talk to young readers, and I welcome the chance to do more of these visits.
